Darwin Nunez is in talks about the most surprising transfer of the summer so far.

Darwin Nunez’s future is taking a surprising turn, as it looks like he might move to Major League Soccer team Atlanta United this summer. The 27-year-old striker joined Al Hilal from Liverpool just a year ago for £46.3 million, but now it seems he’s ready to leave.

Nunez is earning a huge £400,000 a week at the Saudi Pro League club, making him one of the best-paid players in the world. But things haven’t gone well for him in Riyadh. When Karim Benzema joined Al Hilal in January, Nunez was taken off the team’s squad list for the second half of the season.

Saudi clubs can only register eight foreign players born before 2003 on their 25-player squads. So, to many people’s surprise, Nunez and former Arsenal defender Pablo Mari were cut.

Al Hilal’s coach Simone Inzaghi said, “The decision was hard, but that’s the coach’s job. Nunez and Pablo are good players. I want them in all competitions, but we have to follow the rules about foreign players.”

Nunez scored six goals in 14 league games last season, but it looks like he will leave Al Hilal soon. Several teams have shown interest. Last month, an Italian report said Ruben Amorim, the new AC Milan coach and former Manchester United manager, wants to sign the Uruguayan striker. Barcelona is also watching his situation, but a move to MLS and Atlanta United seems more likely right now.

According to The Athletic, talks with Atlanta United have started but aren’t very advanced yet. The U.S. club is also trying to sign Rennes forward Breel Embolo at the same time.

Earlier this year, Nunez shared what he misses most about playing for Liverpool. When asked if he missed the club, he said, “Yes, I’d be lying if I said no. They made me and my family feel very good. In tough times, people showed me a lot of support, which was very important to me.”

He added, “I really miss Liverpool a lot.”
