Darwin Nunez is set to make an amazing comeback for Liverpool after the World Cup!
Just a year after leaving Liverpool for a big £45m move to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, fan favorite Darwin Nunez is reportedly ready for an exciting return to Anfield.
During his three years in the Premier League, Nunez was known for his wild energy and hard work. His goal record was a bit all over the place, but his style fit perfectly with Jurgen Klopp’s intense pressing game.
When new coach Arne Slot brought in a different style of play, Nunez struggled to keep his place. However, he found good form in Saudi Arabia, earning a spot—and the important No.9 shirt—on Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay team.
Now, after the World Cup, Nunez looks set to make a strong comeback to the Premier League, with reports saying he’ll be back at Liverpool for the 2026/27 season.
Liverpool’s new manager, Andoni Iraola, has a big job ahead this summer to steady the club after a tough season. Bringing back familiar faces like Nunez could help get the team back on track. Mohamed Salah has even hinted he might stay on after Slot’s exit, and Liverpool could be keen to welcome Nunez home too.
Since Al Hilal surprisingly removed Nunez from their squad in February, making him a free agent, he’s admitted he misses the club. This seems to have opened the door for a return. Now, Liverpool reportedly plans to sign him without a transfer fee—just his wages.
Uruguayan journalist Juan Pablo Romero says Nunez is “confirmed” to be back at Liverpool next season, though the official news will wait until after the World Cup, so the player can focus on his national team.
With Hugo Ekitike likely out for the season with a serious injury, Nunez could fill an important gap. Alexander Isak would lead the attack, with Nunez as a powerful backup—a move fans will surely appreciate after a slow 2025/26.
Liverpool might also bring in some new players from Iraola’s old club, Bournemouth, including Brazilian winger Rayan and French forward Eli Junior Kroupi. There’s also talk that PSG defender Illia Zabarnyi could reunite with Iraola.
After a big spending spree last season, signing Nunez for free and promoting academy star Rio Ngumoah would be smart ways to keep costs down. Liverpool still need to find a replacement for Konate too, so this transfer window looks set to be busy.
All in all, having a familiar face like Nunez back for no transfer fee would be a great move for Liverpool.
