Eddie Hearn shares Anthony Joshua’s honest thoughts on the Tyson Fury fight controversy
Eddie Hearn has shared how Anthony Joshua feels about his long-awaited fight with Tyson Fury, which still hasn’t happened yet. These two British boxing stars, seen by fans as some of the best heavyweights of their time, are set to finally meet in November after years of talk and planning.
Both fighters have faced almost every big name in boxing except each other. But now, their fight might be at risk because of a disagreement over where it should happen.
Neither Joshua nor Fury is in top form right now. Joshua had a tough time last month in a fight against Kristian Prenga, going down twice in the first round before turning it around. Fury had an easier warm-up against 46-year-old Mariusz Wach, winning by stoppage in the seventh round. Joshua finished his fight with a knockout in the second round.
Although contracts are signed for their matchup, Netflix, which is broadcasting the fight, wants it to take place in New York. But this goes against what Joshua and Fury agreed on—it was supposed to be in the UK.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, explained how Joshua feels about these issues. Talking to IFL TV, he said Joshua is getting really frustrated with all the problems slowing the fight down. Hearn confirmed that Netflix is pushing hard to move the fight to the US, which is causing complications.
“AJ is clear he wants this fight in the UK,” Hearn said. “I keep going back to him because the organisers tell me to talk to AJ. But after several talks, he’s getting fed up. He says, ‘Ed, I told you: I want this fight in the UK. That’s what we agreed.’”
If Joshua agrees to fight overseas, the most likely spot would be Madison Square Garden in New York, home of the NBA champion Knicks. For Joshua, that place might bring back tough memories—he lost there to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 after some dramatic knockdowns.
Fury, who seems open to fighting in America, also has a history at Madison Square Garden. He won there in 2013 against Steve Cunningham in a fight that also saw knockdowns for both fighters, similar to Joshua’s loss there.
