Manchester United have let Atalanta know they won’t be moving forward with signing Ederson, as reports say the deal has now “collapsed.”

Ederson was expected to join United this summer in a £35 million deal, with an extra £4 million in add-ons. The 26-year-old midfielder had reportedly agreed to personal terms and was ready to sign a four-year contract, with an option to extend it by another year.

Back in June, Sky Sports reported that the deal was likely to happen before July, once Ederson completed a medical at Old Trafford. But it seems things have now fallen through.

After Brazil’s recent World Cup exit, United asked Ederson to take extra medical tests, mainly because of a knee concern. These tests were done over the past two days, but Fabrizio Romano shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the transfer is off and the deal is considered dead.

Romano wrote: “Ederson to Manchester United, deal OFF and considered as collapsed as Man Utd informed Atalanta. Atalanta believe Ederson is 100% fit and will welcome the midfielder back as part of their squad, as Man United changed their plans. Ederson won’t join Manchester United.”

The Times reports that United are worried about Ederson’s knee injury but haven’t completely given up yet, as they plan to do more tests. Meanwhile, Ederson hasn’t been told if the move is on but is “desperate” to join the club.

With Casemiro gone and Manuel Ugarte out long-term due to an ACL injury from the World Cup, United definitely need more players in central midfield. They are also close to signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million plus £2 million in add-ons, with Santos about to take his medical.

So, who might they try for next? TEAMtalk says United are interested in Roma’s Manu Kone, a 25-year-old French midfielder who wants to play in the Premier League. Roma might sell him for around £50 million.

Kone shares some qualities with Aurelien Tchouameni, who United missed out on signing. He’s known for winning the ball and carrying it forward, and his World Cup performances have caught attention. Last season, Kone made 37 appearances as Roma qualified for the Champions League.

It looks like United are busy searching for the right players to strengthen their midfield!
