EFL fans are asking for a big rule change after what they saw in the Wolves vs Blackburn game.
The EFL Championship is pretty upset after the first game of the season and wants some rules to change for the rest of the year.
The 2026/27 season kicked off on Friday night, with Wolverhampton Wanderers hosting Blackburn Rovers at Molineux. This was Wolves’ first match since they were dropped from the Premier League. Fans had high hopes that Wolves would bounce straight back up.
But the game didn’t start well. Blackburn took the lead with goals from defender Sean McLoughlin and forward Andri Gudjohnsen, even though Wolves scored first through Marshall Munetsi. Luckily, Wolves managed to grab a point when Ryan Alebiosu’s handball led to a penalty. Substitute Raul Jimenez calmly scored in injury time, making it 2-2.
While Wolves fans were happy to get a draw, fans from other clubs weren’t pleased with how Jimenez took his penalty. On social media, many called on the EFL to do something about it. Jimenez used a stuttering run-up to confuse Blackburn’s goalkeeper Balazs Toth. Some say he took it too far, making it almost impossible for the keeper to guess where to dive.
One fan asked on X, “Seriously, how is that allowed?” Another said, “If keepers can’t move off the line, attackers shouldn’t be allowed to do stutter-steps. This needs to change.” Others joked about Jimenez’s three stutters, comparing it to a dance routine. Many thought new rules should stop these tricky penalties.
This goal was Jimenez’s first since returning to Wolves on a two-year deal, with an option for a third year. The 35-year-old joined after leaving Fulham as a free agent this summer. To celebrate, he and his wife gave 5,000 fans black scarves saying “SI SENOR,” a nod to his old chant.
Jimenez previously played 166 matches for Wolves between 2018 and 2023, scoring 57 goals after moving from Benfica. This summer, he joined the club alongside former Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier, who also signed a two-year deal. Trippier played 68 minutes in his debut against Blackburn before being subbed off for Jackson Tchatchoua.
