An EFL move could happen if Man City gets kicked out of the Premier League.
The EFL is ready to stand with the Premier League if Manchester City gets kicked out of England’s top league, which could lead to a shocking “doomsday” situation.
On Friday (September 25), it was reported that City was found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges by the Premier League for breaking financial rules. However, no penalties have been decided yet, and the club is expected to appeal, so this case might go on for a while.
We do know that breaking these rules could seriously affect the club’s future. According to Rule W.51 in the Premier League handbook, penalties could include fines, losing points, or even being kicked out of the league.
If City were to be removed from the Premier League, that would mean they’d be dropped to a lower division after the season ends. But what does the EFL think about this?
Journalist Ben Jacobs shared on talkSPORT that if Manchester City is kicked out of the Premier League, the EFL plans to back the Premier League’s decision and might refuse to let City join any EFL divisions.
He explained, “The Premier League is pushing for a big, record-breaking points deduction, and maybe even relegating Manchester City. And if that happens, the EFL will support them and try to keep City out as well. So, in the worst-case scenario, Manchester City could be kicked out of football completely.”
That said, the BBC reports there’s little interest in taking away City’s past Premier League titles, though it’s not impossible since the independent panel hasn’t yet decided on penalties.
City won the Premier League in 2011-12, 2013-14, and 2017-18.
Possible punishments for breaking the rules include fines, points deductions, or relegation from the Premier League. The independent commission can decide on these penalties for the club.
