Eliott Anderson has already upset Man Utd fans with his first interview as a Man City player.
Elliott Anderson didn’t hold back in his first interview after joining Manchester City, taking a cheeky swipe at Manchester United – and fans have been buzzing about it ever since.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who played a big part for England in the World Cup this summer, moved to City from Nottingham Forest in a £116 million deal. After interest from several clubs, including Manchester United, Anderson said he was “determined to make this move happen.”
United had tried hard to sign him but thought Forest’s price was too high. It seems Anderson was set on playing for City. “I can’t wait to play for this club. It’s a team built to win trophies and compete at the very top. That’s exciting for any player,” he said. “They’re winners, relentless, and that’s exactly the kind of team I want to join. They’ve dominated for the last 10 to 12 years, and that’s why I chose City.”
Anderson also mentioned the upcoming Manchester derby on September 13 at Old Trafford, where City faces United. Given his comments, he’s likely to get a fiery reception. “For as long as I’ve known, City have been the kings of Manchester. It’s a great game, and I can’t wait to be part of it.”
Manchester United fans were quick to respond. One said, “This will hurt when Carrick shines in his first Derby.” Another wrote, “Elliott, remember football didn’t start in 2011. Check the trophy cabinet when you get a chance.” Others warned, “The last one who talked like this was Cherki, and look what happened,” and, “City players always mention United to get attention. We’re always the centre of attention.” One fan added, “When players join United, they don’t need to talk about City to prove they made the right choice.”
Right after the transfer was confirmed, Manchester City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, praised Anderson as “one of the best young midfield talents in the world.” He said, “He brings energy, great work rate, and excellent passing. His progress recently shows how much he wants to become the best. At 23, he has plenty of room to grow, and we believe he can become a complete midfielder. Manchester City is the perfect place for him to improve, and we’re glad he feels the same.”
