England fans have been sharing the funniest reasons they’re using to stay in America a bit longer.
We asked England fans what they’re telling people back home as they keep putting off their return.
England has made it through, and for the lucky fans who traveled to the States, going back is starting to feel less and less appealing. Whether they’re hoping to see the Three Lions go all the way or just don’t want to risk leaving early, many fans are already thinking about how they’ll explain staying longer to their bosses, partners, family, and friends.
At least they don’t have to worry about phone bills—O2 is kindly refunding roaming charges in the USA until July 20 for pay monthly customers. Their ‘Roam ’til it comes home’ offer (clever, right?) gives fans one more reason to delay heading to the airport if England’s World Cup run keeps going.
That got us curious (yes, sometimes we wonder) — what excuses are fans using to justify staying in America even longer? We asked them, and you won’t believe their answers.
Here’s what they said:
“I told my boss my return flight keeps getting delayed. I just forgot to say I’m the one delaying it.”
A risky move—especially since your holiday ended three days ago!
“I told my family I’ll be back for Sunday lunch. Just didn’t say which Sunday.”
Technically true. Whether your mum agrees is another story.
“I can’t leave now—I’m obviously the team’s lucky charm.”
England hasn’t lost since I got here. Leaving now would be bad luck!
“I said I need a few extra days to ‘experience the culture.’”
By ‘culture,’ I mean finding the best sports bar for the next England match.
“I convinced everyone my suitcase got lost.”
Funny how it disappeared right after England advanced…
“I told my girlfriend anniversaries are about making memories. This definitely counts.”
Definitely memorable. Whether for good reasons or not, who knows?
“If England aren’t coming home yet, neither am I.”
Simple. Honest. Hard to argue with.
Whether you’re really staying longer or just dreaming about it, O2 has clearly got fans covered. With their ‘Roam ’til it comes home’ deal, they’re refunding roaming charges in the USA until July 20 for pay monthly customers. That’s one more reason to enjoy the World Cup a little longer.
And don’t worry, mum—football means we’ll all be home soon.
Ts & Cs:
UK customers only. PAYM Classic Plans. O2 will credit the cost of eligible Bolt Ons and standard roaming charges in the USA between July 6 and 20, 2026, to your O2 account before your payment date. Fair Use applies. See Terms.
