England had an exciting ‘verbal agreement’ with a top world-class manager before choosing Thomas Tuchel.
A top manager reportedly agreed to become England’s head coach before the Football Association (FA) chose Thomas Tuchel.
After Gareth Southgate quit following England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, the FA wanted a coach with one clear goal: to win the 2026 World Cup.
Lee Carsley stepped in as interim boss from August to November 2024, and then Tuchel took over starting January 1, 2025. He led the Three Lions to the World Cup with an impressive record—winning all eight qualifying games and not letting in a single goal.
At the tournament, England sailed through the group stage with wins over Croatia and Panama, despite a frustrating 0-0 draw against Ghana. Harry Kane’s two goals helped England avoid elimination against DR Congo in the round of 32, and Jude Bellingham starred in a tough 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16.
In the quarter-finals, England faced Norway, led by Erling Haaland. Even though they fell behind, Bellingham scored twice to secure an extra-time victory and set up an exciting semi-final against Argentina.
England took the lead through Anthony Gordon, but late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez meant England’s wait for a World Cup final would continue.
Tuchel faced heavy criticism after the loss, with fans, experts, and even players saying the team played too defensively, a style Southgate was often criticized for too.
Despite this, the FA stands by Tuchel. FA chief Mark Bullingham said, “It’s heartbreaking to come so close. The players and Thomas gave their all, and the whole team worked incredibly hard. Thanks to our amazing fans in the USA and back home—we felt your support every step of the way. We’re all very disappointed not to go further.”
Tuchel also made it clear he’s fully committed to leading England at Euro 2028. When asked if he wants to stay on, he said, “Yes, 100%. There’s plenty to improve, and I’m happy to do that. I’ve loved every day of the World Cup.”
But things might have been different, according to a report from The Athletic. They said the FA wanted Pep Guardiola to take over in 2024 and even had a verbal agreement before he chose to stay with Manchester City for another season.
Guardiola didn’t win any trophies with City in 2024/25 but went on to claim the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in 2025/26. He left at the end of that season and is now without a job.
England will play France in the bronze medal match in Miami on Saturday, July 18.
