Enzo Fernandez speaks out after tough criticism about his World Cup behavior
Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez has been getting a lot of attention recently for his actions at the World Cup. Just days after being sent off in the final against Spain, he spoke out on social media.
It’s been a busy few days for the Chelsea midfielder. On July 15, he caught everyone’s eye with his celebration after scoring a stunning long-range goal in the semi-final against England. Fernandez cupped his ears to the crowd, showing his excitement. Argentina then won the match thanks to a late goal from Lautaro Martinez. After the game, Fernandez shared a fun photo of himself with Lionel Messi and Leandro Paredes laughing together while the song “Wonderwall” played. Since “Wonderwall” was kind of England’s unofficial anthem during the World Cup, some England fans were upset by his playful tease.
Four days later, Fernandez played in the final against Spain but didn’t finish the game. In stoppage time, he first got a yellow card for disagreeing with the referee, and then 10 minutes later, he was sent off after a bad challenge on Spain’s Pau Cubarsi. Spain went on to score in extra time and won the match. Fernandez was criticized for losing his cool at such an important moment.
After the final, Fernandez shared a heartfelt message on social media. He said, “Over time, you realize there’s more than just the result. For years, this team has worn our badge with pride and given their all. Competing is about never giving up and fighting for the jersey. I’m proud to be part of a group that always puts in 100%, plays with pride, humility, and heart. Thanks to all Argentine fans for your support and love—it means the world to us. Wearing my country’s jersey is the biggest honor of my career, and I’ll keep giving everything on the field.”
In addition to Fernandez’s red card, Leandro Paredes was accused of throwing a punch after the final whistle, and Argentina faced criticism for turning their backs on Spain during the trophy ceremony. Inspire of the controversies, Fernandez didn’t comment on these directly.
FIFA has now opened an investigation. A statement said, “After reviewing the match reports from the final, FIFA has appointed a prosecutor to look into possible rule breaches during the post-match events. More information will be shared once the report is complete.”
