Erling Haaland breaks FPL record just hours before Man City’s game starts!

Erling Haaland has already broken a Fantasy Premier League record—even before Manchester City’s next game kicks off!

On Saturday afternoon, Manchester City will try to make it three wins from three when they host newly-promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium.

Right from the start of the season, FPL managers marked this match as the perfect chance to use their triple-captain chip, and it’s now set a new record.

For over two years, the highest number of triple-captain chips used in one gameweek was in Double Gameweek 25 of the 2023/24 season. Back then, 1.5 million managers used it, with many choosing Haaland as their captain for City’s two home games against Chelsea and Brentford. Unfortunately, he only scored 10 points over those matches.

But that didn’t stop even more managers—over 1.56 million this time—from using the triple captain chip on Haaland ahead of his game against Coventry on Saturday.

In fact, almost 1.7 million FPL players have activated their triple-captain chip this week. Many who didn’t pick Haaland probably gave it to another Man City star or to Alexander Isak, who scored 13 points with two goals against Ipswich Town on Friday.

Choosing Haaland could really pay off—he’s scored 137 points in his last 18 starts against newly promoted teams, with 18 goals, four assists, and 19 bonus points.

After scoring two goals against Crystal Palace last time out, Haaland is in great form heading into what could be the most important game of the week for FPL managers.

Along with Haaland, Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki has become the second most-picked player ever in a single Gameweek. After his amazing 14-point performance with two goals against Crystal Palace last week, 2.1 million managers have brought the £7.7 million midfielder into their teams for the Coventry match. He’s just behind Cristiano Ronaldo in all-time transfer records.

Ahead of Ronaldo’s Premier League return in Gameweek 4 of the 2021/22 season, 2.2 million managers added him—and he quickly rewarded them with two goals at home against Newcastle.

Cherki’s four attacking returns in just two games, totaling 22 points, show why so many managers are hoping he can do just as well against Coventry.

But some new owners are surprised by recent social media rumors, coming from accounts claiming to be Man City insiders, that Cherki might not start against Coventry.

Reports say Cherki could be benched, along with two other popular players, Antoine Semenyo (19.4% ownership) and Nico O’Reilly (18.5%).

So, it’s definitely an exciting and unpredictable week ahead for Fantasy Premier League managers!
