F1 is about to make a big change to the schedule, with news coming out ‘very, very soon.’
The 2027 Formula 1 season is set to grow even more exciting, with big changes to the race calendar expected to be shared soon. The 2026 season is already rolling with nine races done and just two more before the summer break. This year’s calendar has 24 race weekends, including a couple that were cancelled in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, so we’re close to the halfway point.
Looking ahead, F1 is already planning the full 2027 schedule. Stefano Domenicali, the F1 President, said announcements will be made “very soon.” He also hinted that next year might include more Sprint race weekends, possibly bringing the total number of races to 34. While there will still be 24 main Grands Prix, the number of Sprint races could go up from six to around ten.
Sprint races recently celebrated their fifth birthday at the British Grand Prix, with Silverstone hosting one of the six Sprints this season. Domenicali thinks it makes sense to add even more Sprints next year. He told Sky Sports, “At first, people were unsure about Sprint races, but we’re trying to be brave and think differently. We saw 150,000 fans on Friday at Silverstone—it shows that people want exciting, action-packed events.”
He added, “We’re working on announcing a bigger number of Sprint weekends with the calendar release very soon.” This news will surely thrill fans who love the extra excitement Sprints bring, but it might also upset some who aren’t big fans of the format.
It’s not clear yet which tracks will host the new Sprint races, but Silverstone is likely to be included again. Plus, the 2027 calendar will be even more interesting with two European tracks making a comeback: the Portuguese and Turkish Grands Prix. Meanwhile, the Dutch Grand Prix will take a break after this year, and Barcelona will rotate with Belgium, returning in 2028.
Although Melbourne has opened the season for the last two years, the 2027 season is expected to start in Bahrain after pre-season testing there. Because of Ramadan and other challenges, Bahrain hasn’t opened the season since 2024, but with Ramadan ending early in March, Bahrain is set to host the first race again next year.
