F1 changes Monaco Grand Prix result for the second time, nearly three months after the race
The Monaco Grand Prix results have changed yet again after McLaren and Red Bull won their appeals against the race’s controversial outcome.
Pierre Gasly from Alpine originally finished third on the track but was moved down to seventh after the race because he got two five-second penalties for going too fast in the pit lane. He was later put back in third place after winning an appeal in June. But now, after almost three months, the penalties have been brought back, changing the results once more.
Gasly’s team first argued that the pit lane’s official length was measured incorrectly, saying there was a 77-centimeter difference between the official distance and the shortest legal path a driver could take. They won the appeal by proving this meant Gasly didn’t actually break the speed limit.
However, McLaren appealed the decision, saying it wasn’t fair since their driver Oscar Piastri lost points because of the same rules. Piastri was one of four drivers given five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane.
The latest ruling says all the original penalties will stand. That means Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar moves back up to third place, Piastri climbs to fourth, and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad move to fifth and sixth, with Gasly dropping back to seventh.
The Court of Appeal said the measurements for the speed limit can’t be changed during a Grand Prix weekend after drivers have already been told what they are.
Alpine released a statement saying they still believe Gasly didn’t break the rules but will accept the court’s decision. They said: “While we disagree with the decision and still believe Gasly did not exceed the pit-lane speed limit during the race, we respect the judgment from the hearing in Paris. Though this isn’t the result we wanted and feels unfair, our team is focused on improving and fighting hard in this close championship.”
Because of this, Gasly hasn’t had a podium finish in the 2026 F1 season yet, with his best result being sixth place at the Chinese Grand Prix. He’ll be looking to bounce back at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend.
