FA issues a statement about Manchester City FFP case, stressing the importance of keeping the game fair
The English FA has finally spoken up about Manchester City’s guilty verdict, saying it’s a big deal for the fairness of the game.
Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Manchester City was found guilty of nearly all 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League more than three years ago. The Premier League quickly shared details about ‘sham’ contracts, while City released several statements saying they are innocent. Now, the FA has shared its thoughts.
Since the news broke, the FA stayed quiet, waiting for things to settle down after the big announcement. But now, they’ve said they will carefully think about what the decision means before taking any steps, if needed.
In a short statement, the FA said: “The Independent Commission’s decision has big implications for the integrity of the game. We are looking carefully at the decision and will act if necessary. Since the case between the Premier League and Manchester City is still ongoing, we won’t say more right now, but we will keep a close eye on what happens.”
Manchester City, who still deny any wrongdoing, have until Friday to appeal. The club says they have strong evidence to prove their innocence. Reports suggest City’s main argument will be that the ‘sham’ contracts were linked to Abu Dhabi’s government, which owns their sponsor, not the club owners Abu Dhabi United Group. They believe this shows no rules were broken because sponsorships from government-backed companies are common and allowed in the Premier League.
It’s not clear how long the appeal will take, or if City will face penalties before it’s finished.
FA’s statement came after the Premier League’s CEO, Richard Masters, explained why they’ve been so determined to go after City. He said the decision clearly shows how the club broke the rules for almost ten years and supports the Premier League’s choice to take the case seriously.
Masters added, “It’s our job to make sure the rules, which clubs agree on, are followed to keep the competition fair and exciting for everyone. This case and decision are the most important in Premier League history. Some parts are still to be decided, including the punishments. Now that we have the Commission’s decision, we’ll move quickly to finish this process and give certainty to the League, clubs, and fans.”
No one yet knows what punishment City might face if the verdict is confirmed, but big fines, losing points, transfer bans, or even being relegated or kicked out of the Premier League are all possible.
Fans were also shocked by what the club sent them just hours before the verdict was announced.
