Former Premier League players don’t make it to The Open after switching to pro golf.

The Open Championship will take place at Royal Birkdale from July 16 to 19. It’s one of the biggest events in golf. While some big names will be playing, including the current champion Scottie Scheffler, a few familiar faces won’t be there — like two former Premier League footballers.

Even though The Open is a top golf tournament, non-professional players can still try to qualify through regional events. According to Sky Sports, over 2,000 golfers competed across 16 different venues in one-day tournaments on Monday. These 18-hole events gave players a chance to move on to the final qualifying rounds, which will happen on June 30 at four locations.

Among those trying to qualify were two ex-Premier League stars who’ve taken up golf since retiring. Jimmy Bullard, who has some golf experience including playing in PGA EuroTour events, took part but didn’t make the cut. He finished just outside the top 15 with a one-over 72 at Rochester & Cobham Park.

Peter Odemwingie, a former West Bromwich Albion striker and now a professional PGA golfer, also didn’t qualify. He had a tough day at Enville, shooting 12 over with an 84.

Other sports stars tried regional qualifying too, like former Somerset cricketer Peter Trego, who scored eight over 80 at Minchinhampton, and winter Olympian Kevin Esteve, who shot three over 73 at North Hants. Wesley Bryan, a former PGA Tour player, is still in the running after a great three-under 68 at Hesketh to reach the final qualifying round.

Golf fans might’ve hoped to see the ex-footballers at The Open this summer, but there’s still plenty to look forward to at Royal Birkdale. Rory McIlroy will be one of the top players, aiming to win his second major of the season. He’ll also be looking to get back at defending champ Scheffler, who recently won at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
