Formula One officials quickly meet to talk about possible Miami Grand Prix cancellation
The FIA is planning to hold a meeting to talk about worries that the Miami Grand Prix might be postponed or even cancelled. After an unexpected five-week break because both the Saudi Arabia and Bahrain races were cancelled, Formula One is finally back this weekend.
The Miami International Autodrome will host the first race since the Japan Grand Prix in late March, with the first practice sessions starting on Friday evening. On Saturday, Miami will hold the second sprint race of the season, and the main race is scheduled for Sunday night at 9:00 PM BST.
However, before the weekend even begins, there are concerns that bad weather could cause problems. While Saturday looks clear, strong thunderstorms are expected in Miami for much of Sunday, putting the race at risk.
Cadillac driver Sergio Perez shared that the FIA will meet on Thursday to check the weather situation and figure out how to avoid canceling the race if possible. At a press conference, Perez said, “The FIA will double-check the plans for Sunday because the weather looks bad. We’ll see if they change anything in the schedule.”
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri said he’s curious to see how the new 2026 cars will handle tricky weather. He said, “It’ll be interesting. Not many of us have driven these cars in the rain, maybe just a few in Barcelona. They’ll be tough to drive in wet conditions because of some of their unique features. Miami rain usually comes down hard, so we’ll see. Either way, it’ll be an interesting weekend.”
It’s not clear yet what the FIA will do if the weather makes the current plans unsafe, but there are a few options. Cancelling the race is possible since FIA rules say races must stop if lightning is near the track and the medical helicopter can’t fly.
However, according to F1 insider Kym Illman, another choice the FIA might consider is starting the race earlier to get ahead of the storms expected in the afternoon. We’ll have to wait and see what they decide!
