Future NFL quarterback’s career at risk after breaking gambling rules on Romanian football and a hot dog eating contest

A rising NFL quarterback with over 82 touchdowns in college has put his professional future at risk because of a gambling addiction. Brendan Sorsby, who’s moving to Texas Tech after playing for Indiana Hoosiers and Cincinnati Bearcats, is known as one of the most exciting young players in American football.

As he prepared for his senior year, news came out that the NCAA was investigating Sorsby for betting on sports. But it wasn’t just small bets on baseball—he was reportedly betting on everything from Romanian football to Turkish basketball, and even the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest!

On May 18, the NCAA revealed that Sorsby had placed thousands of bets on all kinds of events, but interestingly, none on American football. Documents showed he never bet on any Cincinnati football games or players during the 2024 or 2025 seasons, and he didn’t share inside information with anyone. “I never changed how I played based on any bets on Cincinnati football,” he said in an official statement.

His bets were more personal and varied, including trips to casinos in Oklahoma with friends. The NCAA is looking into whether he bet on any events they organize or sponsor. Things like horse racing bets aren’t considered illegal here. If cleared, Sorsby could start playing for Texas Tech this September.

While the investigation is ongoing, Sorsby has taken a big step and checked himself into rehab to deal with his gambling problem. “I realize I let my gambling get out of control and needed professional help,” he shared. “I never planned for this, especially since I was raised with strong values from going to church every Sunday, and I still hold onto those values.”

Sorsby needs to be cleared by June 22 if he wants to play this year. That date is also the NFL supplemental draft deadline for anyone hoping to join the 2026/27 season. If he misses it, he’ll have to sit out a whole year. “Missing a year of football — which is so important for my growth — would really hurt me both personally and professionally,” he said.

Experts believe that if he stays on track, Sorsby could be a popular mid-round pick in future NFL drafts. The investigation also points out concerns that sports often promote betting through sponsorships, something the industry has been trying to address for years.
