Gareth Southgate is being talked about for a new international football role, two years after stepping down as England manager.

England faced more heartbreak on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. The Three Lions were just five minutes away from their first World Cup final in 60 years after Anthony Gordon scored first. But late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez ended their hopes.

Thomas Tuchel got a lot of criticism for his choices in the second half. Instead of pushing hard for a second goal, the German coach switched to a five-man defense and let Argentina take control. This decision cost England the game, but it likely won’t cost Tuchel his job. Reports say the FA plans to keep him, even though many fans want him gone.

Tuchel, 52, has been managing England since January 2025 and wants to lead the team to Euro 2028. “Yes, 100%. There is still plenty to improve, and I’m happy to do that. I’ve loved every day of the World Cup,” he said when asked about his future.

While Tuchel looks set to stay, Gareth Southgate might be stepping into a new role soon. Reports suggest he could replace USA manager Mauricio Pochettino, who took the US to the World Cup last 16 before a big 4-1 loss to Belgium. With Pochettino’s contract ending this summer, his future is unsure.

Pochettino, who once managed Tottenham and Chelsea, has been linked to a surprise return to the Premier League or a job at AC Milan, which he has now turned down. After the loss to Belgium, he said, “Now is not the time to talk about that. We need to review the tournament first. I’m sure we’ll talk more in the coming weeks if U.S. Soccer wants to.”

It seems a decision on Pochettino’s future will come soon, which could open the door for Southgate. Though Southgate didn’t win a major trophy with England, he made the team believe again after years of disappointment. He won 61 of 102 games and came close to winning Euro 2024, losing 2-1 to Spain, while also reaching the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Tuchel’s arrival brought hope for England to reach the next level, but their best chance at a World Cup win might have slipped away. Maybe if Tuchel hadn’t played so defensively in the second half against Argentina, England would be celebrating a spot in the final.
