Gary Neville apologizes live on Sky Sports after Arsenal’s goal is ruled out

Gary Neville had to apologize live on Sky Sports after he jumped to conclusions about Arsenal’s disallowed goal against Chelsea.

Early in the game at the Emirates Stadium, Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead before the champions equalized with a goal from Kai Havertz, who scored against his old team.

Before that, Riccardo Calafiori scored for Arsenal, but the goal was ruled out after VAR showed that Ezri Konsa was offside before the ball went in.

Right away, Neville shared his thoughts, saying, “I disagree with it.” He explained, “He’s definitely offside, but I think Emi Martinez had a clear chance to save it. I don’t think Konsa was interfering. If he touched the ball, that would count.”

Neville wanted to see another angle, but soon it was clear Konsa did touch the ball while offside. Realizing this, Neville quickly apologized to VAR and the referees.

He said, “Oh, he touches it. Correction. Apologies to VAR and the PGMOL.”

Then lead commentator Peter Drury told Neville that PGMOL had changed their name to Pro Ref, and Neville replied, “Absolutely. Pro Ref is it? Oh, okay. Excellent.”

Fans weren’t happy with Neville’s commentary and how he got things wrong. One wrote on X, “Someone please explain offside to Gary Neville because he sounds so clueless.” Another said, “Terrible commentary from Neville on the offside goal.” A third added, “Gary Neville doesn’t seem to get the offside rule at all.” And a fourth exclaimed, “What is Gary Neville talking about? Konsa kicked the ball while he was offside!”
