Philadelphia native Sean Brady showcased his skills and solidified his spot as one of the top welterweights in the world with a dominant performance against Gilbert Burns. Brady, with a record of 17-1, outpointed Burns (22-8) in a five-round main event at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas.
Throughout the fight, the 31-year-old Brady maintained a relentless pace and outperformed Burns in every aspect of the 170-pound contest. The judges scored the fight 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46 in favor of Brady. Brady’s performance improved his UFC record to an impressive 7-1, with his only loss coming against current champion Belal Muhammad in October 2022.
Following the victory, Brady expressed his confidence in his performance, particularly noting his strength in striking compared to ground game. He emphasized his desire to be ranked higher and expressed interest in facing opponents in the top five of the welterweight division in his next fight.
One of Brady’s key strengths in the fight was his volume of strikes and takedown attempts against Burns. According to UFC Stats, Brady landed 251 total strikes compared to Burns’ 71 and attempted 17 takedowns while Burns attempted only six. Brady effectively utilized his jab in the early rounds and displayed excellent leg kicks in the final round.
On the other hand, Gilbert Burns, who previously challenged Kamaru Usman for the championship, had a challenging night against Brady. Burns failed to find his rhythm and was outmatched by Brady’s relentless pace and striking prowess. Despite a few moments of success in the fight, Burns was unable to gain significant momentum throughout the 25-minute bout.
With three consecutive losses, including defeats to Brady, Jack Della Maddalena, and Belal Muhammad, Burns faces a tough road ahead in the welterweight division. Meanwhile, Muhammad is gearing up to face undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov in his next fight, leaving Brady to seek out new challenges in the top rankings of the division.
Sean Brady’s victory over Gilbert Burns solidifies his position as a top competitor in the welterweight division. Brady’s impressive performance showcased his striking skills, takedown prowess, and overall dominance in the Octagon. As he looks towards future matchups with top-ranked opponents, the MMA world eagerly awaits Brady’s next move in his quest for welterweight supremacy.
