Austria and Algeria played an exciting 3-3 draw that helped both teams move on to the knockout stage of the World Cup, and sadly, it meant Iran was knocked out. Iran finished third in their group but didn’t make the cut as one of the best third-place teams because Senegal had a better goal difference.

Senegal was the only team to reach the knockouts with just three points from the group stage. Iran drew all three of their games and ended up third in a group where Belgium and Egypt moved forward.

It was a tough end for Iran, especially when Riyad Mahrez scored a 93rd-minute goal for Algeria to make it 3-2. Iran thought that goal would help them advance on goal difference, pushing them ahead of Austria. But then, Austria scored again just three minutes later to level the game at 3-3, which meant Austria and Algeria both went through with four points each from the group.

Sasa Kalajdzic’s goal not only earned Austria a draw but also ended a long wait — they made it to the knockout stage for the first time in 72 years! Before this, Austria hadn’t gotten past the group stage in the World Cups they’ve played since 1954.

Coach Ralf Rangnick and his team will be hoping for a strong run like in 1954 and 1934, when Austria finished third and fourth. Now, Austria will face Spain on July 2 in Inglewood, while Algeria will play against Switzerland in Vancouver on the same day.
