Before Monday’s round-of-16 game at Dallas Stadium, Ronaldo had already said that the 2026 World Cup would be his last. It wasn’t the storybook ending the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wanted, as Mikel Merino scored a late goal that sent Spain through to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of USA vs Belgium.
Right after the final whistle, Ronaldo stood quietly in the middle of the pitch, looking disappointed. He was seen wiping away tears while waving to fans. Then, he slowly made his way to Portugal’s dressing room.
At the same time, internet personality iShowSpeed, who was at the match, is becoming popular on social media for his emotional reaction. The content creator and big Ronaldo fan was so upset he sank down to the floor.

Even though he said this is his last World Cup, it’s still not clear if Ronaldo will keep playing for Portugal, especially with Euro 2028 just two years away.
At a press conference on Sunday (July 5), Ronaldo said: “Let this be my last World Cup; it is my last World Cup, and I hope tomorrow won’t be my last match.”
He added, “I will finish when I choose. You always ask the same question: is this the last one? We will see. I don’t want to focus on that; the most important thing is to play well tomorrow.
“To be honest, no matter what happens tomorrow, I will leave with a clear conscience. I have given everything to football. It’s been my passion for many years. I’m not doing this because I have to; I’m doing well in life. I play because I love the game.
“No matter what happens tomorrow, I won’t put pressure on myself to win. You have to enjoy every game in a big competition like the World Cup. I think I’m not doing too badly. I have scored three goals; others may have done better, but I’m happy with my performance.”
