Jamie Carragher publicly apologizes to Luis Enrique after turning down a CBS interview

Jamie Carragher gave a friendly public apology to Paris Saint-Germain’s head coach, Luis Enrique, after Enrique led his team to the Champions League final for the second year in a row. PSG will try to win the title again against Arsenal later this month, after beating Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. They won a thrilling first leg 5-4 in Paris and drew 1-1 in Munich to secure their spot in the final once more.

Carragher, the Liverpool legend, was working as a commentator for CBS Sports during PSG’s big win on Wednesday night. During the post-match show, the team wanted to speak with PSG’s coach, but Luis Enrique was hesitant because of something Carragher had said before. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi joked he would try to get Enrique to join the interview—and he did! Two minutes in, Enrique appeared live, and the president called him the “best coach in the world,” to lots of cheers.

“Hi, everyone!” Enrique said warmly as Carragher and Micah Richards welcomed him. The host, Kate Scott, then mentioned how Enrique had worried they’d lost Carragher’s friendship for a while, and now he could clear things up.

Carragher apologized for his behavior during the 2024 semi-final first leg against Borussia Dortmund. He admitted he’d been caught up in the moment, wearing a Dortmund scarf and having a few drinks with their fans, which got him a bit carried away. “I’m sorry about that,” he said, “but we’ve really enjoyed watching your team the past two years—congratulations on making the final again!”

Enrique kindly replied, “Thank you, no need to apologize.”

Carragher’s friendly apology came after some playful drama: he had been celebrating with Dortmund fans and even interviewed Jadon Sancho after the game, which upset Dortmund’s press officer because it wasn’t planned. Wearing the Dortmund scarf in PSG’s stadium also ruffled some feathers.

Co-host Peter Schmeichel joked, “Jamie’s in the sin bin! He’s upset everyone here—Luis Enrique came in, said hello, then left when he saw the scarf. We even had trouble with Dortmund’s press officer over the Sancho chat. We’ve been very naughty, but hopefully it made good TV!”
