Jamie Carragher quickly says two Premier League teams won’t win the title this season.
Former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher has already shared his thoughts on who might win the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Arsenal will start the season as champions for the first time since 2004/05. They’ll be aiming to keep their title and also win other trophies, especially after narrowly losing on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s Champions League final.
Arsenal is one of five Premier League teams playing in the Champions League next season, along with Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Aston Villa. Crystal Palace will take part in the Europa League after winning last season’s Conference League, and Bournemouth and Sunderland will also be in the Europa League. Brighton will represent the Premier League in the Conference League.
Nine Premier League teams will have new managers this season. Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle, and Chelsea are among the clubs with new bosses. Xabi Alonso is the new Chelsea manager, Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot at Liverpool, Matthias Jaissle has taken over at Newcastle, and Enzo Maresca is stepping in at Manchester City after Pep Guardiola left.
Even so, Carragher thinks the Italian manager will lead City to the title in his first season, pointing out that City were still close last year even though they weren’t at their best.
On the Football Ramble podcast, Carragher said, “I think City will win the league. They were close last season, and even though Pep is gone, a new manager can bring some fresh energy.
“If Rodri left for Real Madrid, I’d think differently, but he’s still there – he’s the best in his position, and there’s no reason for City to sell him.”
Carragher also said he doesn’t see Liverpool or Manchester United winning the title right now, feeling Liverpool isn’t quite ready, and that United’s recent signings are smart, smaller moves rather than chasing big-name players.
“Liverpool are not close to winning the league yet,” he said, “and United won’t win it either. I like that United seem focused on building the right team, not just spending big on famous players. That’s probably good for them.”
Liverpool will start their Premier League season away at Newcastle on August 23, and Manchester United will face Hull away on the same day.
