Jamie Carragher encourages Andoni Iraola to try a clever tactic against Man City after feeling it’s the right move.
Jamie Carragher has encouraged Liverpool’s new manager, Andoni Iraola, to really fire up the Anfield crowd ahead of their big game against Manchester City on Sunday, October 11.
This will be City’s first match at Anfield since the Premier League found the club guilty of 114 out of 115 charges, mostly related to breaking financial rules. City is appealing the decision and says they have strong evidence to support their case.
If the verdict stands, City could face serious punishments like point deductions, match replays, suspension, relegation, or even losing titles. Liverpool fans are expected to be very vocal since their team was one of the most affected by City’s rule breaches over the past years, especially during tight title races.
Carragher, a former Liverpool captain, thinks Iraola should use this charged atmosphere as motivation for his team and get the fans fully behind them. He called it a ‘cheat code’ to help Liverpool keep their unbeaten streak going this season.
“I’ve been thinking about this match a lot, especially after the long break,” Carragher said on the latest episode of The Overlap podcast. “It feels like the Anfield crowd will be buzzing, but Iraola’s new team might not have felt that full energy yet. Maybe they got a bit in the Atletico Madrid game, but this feels bigger.
“I’m curious to see how Iraola uses the crowd’s energy. I don’t expect him to hype things up much, since he seems pretty calm and focused on football. But honestly, it’d be great if he threw in a little spark to get the fans going and help Liverpool get the three points – that’s what really matters.”
Carragher’s thoughts came just a day after Manchester City’s star striker Erling Haaland spoke out about the verdict. After staying quiet during the international break, Haaland told Sky Sports that City fans should stick together, stay positive, and enjoy the journey ahead.
He said, “They’re going to have a good time at Anfield. We have to stick together, stay positive, and keep smiling no matter what. We just want to win games and enjoy the moment. We need to support one another and spread love.”
Haaland added, “I care a lot about the club and the fans because I’m a fan too, so I really feel for them.”
Meanwhile, City’s head coach Maresca said the team’s spirit is still strong despite the tough situation hanging over the club.
