Jamie Vardy could make an amazing Premier League comeback after turning down Wrexham on Deadline Day.
Everton might pull off a surprising signing by going after free agent Jamie Vardy, especially after a tricky Deadline Day, according to reports.
The Toffees missed out on AS Monaco striker Florian Balogun at the very last minute when the 25-year-old changed his mind. Manager David Moyes was eager to bring in a new striker after allowing Beto to leave for Fiorentina for £17 million. Everton also tried to loan Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee late on, but were turned down.
It was a disappointing end to the transfer window, especially after Iliman Ndiaye’s £65 million move to Manchester City, leaving Moyes with just Thierno Barry as his senior striker.
Everton has also been linked with a surprise move for former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, who left Mexican club Monterrey in June, and Vardy is another player they’re interested in.
According to The Sun, Everton is thinking about signing Jamie Vardy, who left Serie A side Cremonese and is now a free agent. Vardy, 39, is looking for what could be the final club of his career as he turns 40 in January. He believes he can still play at a high level.
This summer, Vardy has been linked with many moves, including a surprising one to Brazilian giants Sao Paulo, and even Championship side Wrexham tried to sign him on Deadline Day. He turned down offers from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds and is now weighing up options after the transfer window closed, with some offers coming from Serie A and MLS.
Everton’s interest in Vardy shows some of their struggle to plan well during the transfer window. While Vardy has scored 145 goals in 342 Premier League games, he’s getting older, and his performance has dipped in recent years.
The Leicester City legend isn’t at his peak anymore, though he showed his quality when he helped Leicester win the Premier League in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2021. But Vardy still believes in himself. He scored nine goals in his last top-flight season and thinks he can bring some goal-scoring experience to Moyes’ team.
Earlier this year, Vardy spoke about retiring, saying his body will tell him when it’s time to stop. He said, “Football is tough on your body and mind, so I want to forget about it when I’m done. I still love the game—if I didn’t, I wouldn’t still be playing.”
He added with a smile, “Luckily for me, my legs are still good at the moment. Do I think about life after football? Not really. I just take things day by day and see what tomorrow brings. That’s just how I’ve always been, even if it annoys some people!”
