Jordan Henderson decides on joining Chelsea after old Liverpool remarks come back to light
Some old comments from Jordan Henderson about Liverpool have come up again after surprising news linked him with a move to Chelsea. On Monday, David Ornstein shared that Xabi Alonso wanted to sign Henderson from Brentford, right after Chelsea had hopeful talks with Brighton about signing Danny Welbeck.
Brentford would let Henderson leave on a free transfer because they have a good relationship with him. He still has one year left on the two-year deal he signed last summer.
At 36 years old, Henderson played 34 games for Brentford last season. His experience and leadership helped the team finish ninth in the Premier League. He was also picked for England’s World Cup squad, with coach Thomas Tuchel highlighting these qualities as important for the team.
Henderson broke his wrist after falling during England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the knockout round but came back to play in the quarter-finals against Norway.
He left Liverpool in 2023 after nearly 500 appearances and was known for lifting the Premier League trophy as captain in 2020. He also helped Liverpool win the Champions League in 2019, making him a true club legend.
After leaving Liverpool, Henderson had a tough time, spending six months at Al-Ettifaq before moving to Ajax. Coming back to the Premier League with Brentford has given his career a boost, but moving to Chelsea might affect how fans remember his time at Liverpool.
After an amazing 12 years at Liverpool, Henderson shared a heartfelt goodbye message: “It’s hard to put these last 12 years into words and it’s even harder to say goodbye. I will always be a Red. Until the day I die. Thank you for everything. You’ll never walk alone. Jordan.”
Many fans feel that, as a former captain, he wouldn’t join a direct rival like Chelsea. But it’s easy to understand why Henderson might be interested in the move, especially since Alonso praised him back in 2019.
Alonso said, “I think he’s so respected, so important for his teammates – that’s the feeling I get watching from the stands. The way they play, his energy is very important.”
Henderson’s experience playing and winning big games is just what Chelsea need for their young squad, especially since they lost strong leaders like Thiago Silva in 2024.
If Chelsea sign Henderson and Welbeck, it could be a big boost as they try to qualify for Europe in 2026/27. If he does join, it will be interesting to see how Liverpool fans react when he faces his old club.
