Jurgen Klopp shares that he has had ‘talks’ with Germany and explains what it will take to succeed Julian Nagelsmann.
Julian Nagelsmann stepped down as Germany’s manager after a tough World Cup, where the team was knocked out in the round of 32 by Paraguay. Since then, Jurgen Klopp has been talked about as a strong candidate to take over.
Klopp, who used to manage Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, is a top choice because of his successful career. He led Liverpool to a Premier League title in 2020 and won the Champions League with them in 2019. After leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2024 season, Klopp has been linked to several big clubs, including Real Madrid.
Now, Klopp has confirmed that he’s in “talks” with the German Football Association (DFB) about becoming the next manager. He told MagentaTV, “Yes, I can confirm the talks. Things moved pretty quickly after Julian stepped down. The DFB is looking for a new manager and they’re talking to me. I’m ready. Once talks start, your mind starts racing. We need to make big changes.”
There’s one challenge, though. Klopp currently works for Red Bull as their Head of Global Football, a role he took on in October 2024 with a four-year contract. However, he has an option in his deal that might let him apply for the Germany job.
Klopp explained how he hopes to handle this, saying, “Time. I’m under contract with Red Bull. I’m interested in these talks. They’ll be serious because this is about more than just Julian Nagelsmann’s role. I also have to talk with Oliver Mintzlaff, my boss. We already started these conversations. I don’t think he’ll stop me. I’ve been with Red Bull for 19 months—it’s been a busy time.”
