Kobbie Mainoo is ready for a new role at Man Utd as the club follows PSG’s plan with Michael Carrick in charge.

Michael Carrick is planning to give Kobbie Mainoo a new role in Manchester United’s team next season, inspired by the way Paris Saint-Germain’s midfielders Fabian Ruiz, João Neves, and Vitinha play.

Now that Carrick is confirmed as United’s head coach, preparations are underway for the 2026/27 season. The club will compete in four tournaments: the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.

Although the transfer window opens on June 15, Brazilian midfielder Ederson has already agreed to join United on a four-year deal after the club agreed on a £35 million fee with Atalanta.

United is looking to strengthen their squad with better quality and more depth, especially because of the busy schedule next season. They want to sign two midfielders, a left winger, and a left-back, and might also bring in a striker and a centre-back.

But it’s not just about new players—Carrick and the club’s leaders also want to change how the team plays. Although Carrick won 12 of 17 games after taking over from Ruben Amorim, he wants the team to control the ball more, like PSG’s midfield trio who have helped their team succeed in the Champions League.

Manchester United currently use a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Bruno Fernandes pushing forward to support the striker, while Luis Enrique’s PSG plays a 4-3-3. Carrick plans to adjust Mainoo’s role, encouraging him to make more attacking runs while still playing his defensive part. This should help Mainoo become a more well-rounded midfielder.

With Ederson likely handling most of the defensive midfield duties, he could be the perfect partner to help Mainoo develop his attacking game.

United still want to sign another midfielder and might add a second if Manuel Ugarte leaves this summer. Mason Mount is expected to stay, even though he started only two games under Amorim. He may also be asked to play a deeper role.

Some players, like forward Joshua Zirkzee and goalkeeper Andre Onana, are expected to leave.

After Mainoo signed a new five-year contract in April, Carrick praised him, saying he “epitomises” what Manchester United is about—bringing up young talent through the academy.

“I’ve been very impressed with Kobbie since I arrived,” Carrick said. “I’ve known about him for a while, and he really shows what this club stands for. Young players coming through with real talent who love the club.

“He’s proven himself, especially in the last few games. Signing a new contract is a natural step, and everyone is thrilled, including me, because he truly deserves it.”
