Lamine Yamal surprises everyone with a honest comment about his time at Barcelona, mentioning Marcus Rashford.
Lamine Yamal shared some interesting thoughts about Marcus Rashford in a recent chat with the Spanish media.
Yamal, 19, talked about many things during his interview with Movistar, including his hopes of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or. He also opened up about facing racism “a thousand times,” which was quite moving.
This young star, who has already scored seven goals in six La Liga games this season, mentioned Rashford when explaining how important the El Clásico rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid is.
“I remember watching Rashford play in his first Clásico and thinking he didn’t fully understand what the game means yet,” Yamal said. “But in the second match, when he scored a free-kick goal, he really showed he got it and played with so much more fire. When you come from La Masia, you know from the very first El Clásico that it’s a true battle.”
This may surprise some fans since Rashford has played in tough Premier League rivalries for Manchester United against teams like Manchester City and Liverpool.
Last season, Rashford made 49 appearances for Barcelona while on loan from Manchester United. He scored 14 goals and helped with 15 assists, playing a big part in Barcelona winning the La Liga title. In the three El Clásico games he played, Rashford scored once and had an assist in Barca’s win over Real Madrid on May 10, which helped them clinch the title.
Despite doing well, Barcelona chose not to sign Rashford permanently for £26 million in the summer. Instead, they signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
Barcelona also brought in players like Rodri, João Cancelo, Karim Adeyemi, Gabriel Jesus, and Dominik Livaković during the summer transfer window.
Back in September, Barca’s sporting director Deco explained why they picked Gordon over Rashford. “We watch every training session and study the team closely. We knew we needed more energy, especially after Raphinha left. Our intensity dropped, and we needed to fix that. We looked at many wingers, and signing someone from the Premier League is tough. But Flick knew what he wanted, and we made it work.”
