LeBron James’ “problem” is out — the NBA superstar now wants two big stars to join him.
LeBron James becoming a free agent has been the big story lately, and reports say he’ll only join an NBA team if they sign two specific players first. LeBron left the LA Lakers after eight years in June and quickly made it clear he’s not retiring. His main goal is to win a fifth championship ring.
As the NBA’s top scorer, LeBron has caught the attention of some big teams like the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Miami Heat. Things got even more exciting when the Heat accidentally posted a video of LeBron’s “introductory press conference” on YouTube, even though he hasn’t chosen his next team yet. They took it down quickly and said it was a mistake by staff preparing for his possible arrival.
LeBron said last week that he’ll decide where to play “soon,” but there’s a reason he’s taking his time. Kevin O’Connor, an NBA analyst, says LeBron is waiting to see if any of these teams can get Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving, two players he wants as teammates. LeBron has history with both—he teamed up with Irving in Cleveland and with Davis at the Lakers.
If a team manages to sign Davis or Irving, it might influence LeBron’s choice. But that’s looking harder to happen. Davis is with the Washington Wizards now, who don’t want to trade him and might even renew his big contract after Golden State showed interest. Davis did seem ready to join a winning team when he talked about how tough it is to go from losing to championship contenders.
Davis’s contract extension kicks in on August 6, so LeBron might wait until then to see what happens. As for Irving, the Dallas Mavericks don’t want to trade him. They’re excited about pairing him with rookie Cooper Flagg next season. Since Irving is recovering from an ACL injury, it seems unlikely he’ll leave to join LeBron.
So, LeBron’s next move depends a lot on what happens with Davis and Irving, and we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see where he lands!
