Leeds United has a big game tonight against Newcastle United in the final match of Premier League matchday four. They need to win to stop something rare from happening for the first time in 26 years!
After an exciting weekend of matches, Daniel Farke’s Leeds will take on Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle at Elland Road. A win for either team would push them up to at least fourth place in the league table, just ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion, who are currently in that spot after a big 5-0 win over struggling Coventry. Both managers will be hoping to get a win, but if Leeds doesn’t, some interesting Premier League history will be made.
Here’s the deal: if Leeds draws or loses, it will be the first time since September 2000 that none of the ten home teams won on a single matchday – something that hasn’t happened in 26 years!
Matchday four has been full of surprises already. Nottingham Forest beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park, Bournemouth and Brentford drew 2-2, and Chelsea managed a lucky 2-2 draw after being behind twice against Hull City. On Sunday, the trend of away wins kept going, with Brighton thrashing Coventry 5-0, and Manchester City edging past Manchester United 1-0 thanks to a controversial goal from Erling Haaland.
Looking back, the last time no home team won across a whole matchday was back in the 2000/01 season. That day saw a lot of draws and a few away victories. It also happened before in the 1996/97 season and even earlier in 1994/95, making this a pretty rare event in Premier League history.
So tonight, all eyes will be on Leeds to see if they can keep this streak alive—or if history will be made once again!
