Liverpool can get a great deal on a player who was once stopped from joining Everton.
Liverpool are showing interest in a player who was nearly blocked from joining Everton almost six years ago. With the Premier League season starting in less than two weeks, Liverpool still have plenty to sort out before their trip to Newcastle United on August 23.
So far, Victor Munoz, a 23-year-old winger signed from Osasuna for £34.5 million, is Liverpool’s only permanent signing this summer. They’ve also brought in Barcelona’s centre-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan.
Andoni Iraola really wants to boost his defence, especially since Virgil van Dijk is the only senior centre-back currently fit after returning from World Cup duty. Other defenders like Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, and Jeremy Jacquet are out injured. That makes Araujo’s arrival perfect, and he might not be the only defender joining Liverpool soon.
According to Italian news outlet Quotidiano Sportivo, Liverpool are also interested in AC Milan’s centre-back Fikayo Tomori, along with Newcastle United and Premier League newcomers Coventry City. Tomori was left out of Milan’s squad that lost 3-0 to Chelsea recently. The AC Milan coach, Ruben Amorim, seems open to letting him go because Tomori doesn’t have the ball-playing style he prefers.
Football news source Get Football News Italy says Milan want around £12.8 million for Tomori, which could be a great deal for the 28-year-old. Tomori has played 214 times for Milan since joining in 2021 for £25 million from Chelsea.
Even though AC Milan had a tough last season, finishing fifth in Serie A and 17 points behind champions Inter Milan, Tomori was a key player, making 37 appearances in all competitions. He plans to talk with his agent soon about leaving Milan even though his contract runs until June 2027. Going back to the Premier League with Liverpool might be the perfect next step.
Tomori came through Chelsea’s academy and played 27 first-team games for them before moving to Milan. Like many Chelsea graduates, he has faced challenges, including the 2020/21 season where he only made one substitute appearance. Even though Chelsea won the Champions League that year, Tomori was left frustrated because his loan move to Everton was blocked by then-manager Frank Lampard in 2020.
Tomori said in 2021, “It was so frustrating. 2020 was a really tough year for me in football, especially after playing regularly in 2019. I went from being at 100% to suddenly not knowing why I dropped to zero. I thought the best thing would be a loan move to get games and come back stronger to Chelsea. I was ready to go, but the manager said I was in his plans. Then, just before the deadline, I was told I could go to West Ham, which was a shock because it wasn’t talked about before. Together with my dad and agent, we planned that if Everton didn’t happen, I’d stay at Chelsea.”
Now, six years after almost joining Everton, Tomori could be playing for Liverpool next season.
