Liverpool fans are sure Andoni Iraola has found the perfect player to build his team around after the Wrexham game.
Liverpool fans are buzzing with excitement about one player’s future under new coach Andoni Iraola after a fantastic performance in their friendly win against Wrexham.
Last week in Nashville, Liverpool beat Sunderland 4-2, and they kept up their winning streak under Iraola with a 1-0 victory over Championship side Wrexham. Rio Ngumoha scored the only goal of the game 75 minutes in at Yankee Stadium in New York.
But it was midfielder Trey Nyoni who really caught people’s attention, playing a strong first half alongside Dominik Szoboszlai and looking completely comfortable on the pitch. The 19-year-old has made 20 appearances for Liverpool after debuting under Jurgen Klopp in 2024.
Despite being recognized for his talent, Nyoni, Liverpool’s youngest-ever player in European competition, hasn’t had many chances in the first team. That might be about to change, though, with the England Under-20 star ready to shine in the 2026/27 season.
Against Wrexham, Nyoni looked relaxed with the ball, handling pressure easily and showing great passing skills. He was always involved, often finding ways to create chances and open up the game for his teammates.
His 45-minute display impressed Liverpool fans, who believe he could be the perfect midfield player for Iraola’s style and think the club might not need to sign Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton after all.
On social media, one fan wrote: “We’ve got our metronome already.” Another said: “He’s got something special & Iraola will take him to the next level this season.” A third added: “He’s going to have an amazing season.”
Liverpool have plenty of midfielders like Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, and Szoboszlai still in the plans. Wataru Endo is also on the team. But the club needs fresh energy in midfield, and it seems Iraola has big hopes for Nyoni.
Iraola said, “Trey is great on the ball, calm, and reads the game well. He’s doing really well with timing and is confident even under pressure. We encourage him to look for space and play forward passes because he can. He asks for the ball even when under pressure and never rushes, which is very valuable.”
Liverpool will play again on Sunday, August 2, against Leeds at Soldier Field in Chicago. After that, they’ll host Monaco and Como in friendlies at Anfield. Their Premier League season kicks off against Newcastle at St James’ Park on August 23.
