Liverpool fans are sure a player is leaving after noticing what he did following the Wrexham win.
Liverpool kept their pre-season tour in the US going with a 1-0 win over Wrexham, but fans think one of their players might be leaving after his behavior at full-time. Rio Ngumoha scored a deflected goal 15 minutes from the end, helping Andoni Iraola stay unbeaten in pre-season after their 4-2 win against Sunderland.
Next up, Liverpool will prepare for a game against Leeds United on August 2, before finishing their Premier League warm-ups with matches against Monaco and Como.
Off the field, the club is busy working on key transfers, with their main target being Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola. So far, their only big signing this summer has been Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million. Earlier this year, they also confirmed the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.
Most of the news at Anfield has been about players leaving, like Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson, and Mohamed Salah, all leaving after their contracts ended in June. More players might go as Iraola reshapes the team. One of those could be midfielder Curtis Jones, who has only a year left on his contract.
Inter Milan has shown strong interest in Jones all summer, making a £21 million offer last month, which Liverpool rejected. They tried again with £27 million in mid-July, but Liverpool still wants £30 million. The club is happy to keep Jones if that price isn’t met, but it looks like he might be heading out.
Jones broke into the first team in 2019 and has made 228 appearances, contributing to 47 goals. Last season, he played 48 times in all competitions but only started 18 out of 34 Premier League games. Coach Arne Slot preferred players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alex Mac Allister, which means Jones’ chances to start this season are even slimmer.
Liverpool is definitely looking to sign a new midfielder, which might make Jones more worried about his future. After the Wrexham game, he seemed frustrated, waving his arms angrily at teammates. Fans think he was unhappy that Szoboszlai gave the captain’s armband to Kostas Tsimikas instead of him, and many now believe he’s on his way out.
One fan said, “Jones right after the game. Think he’s going to be honest. Was fuming at something or someone.” Another wrote, “Curtis has acted like a petulant child this pre-season, don’t need this attitude around a new coach.” Others urged him to calm down and show leadership, since he’s one of the senior players and the only local boy on the team.
Some fans were more blunt, saying things like “Curtis Jones clearly wants to leave” and “Curtis Jones: atrocious attitude. Get him gone.” It’s clear there’s a lot of drama surrounding his future at Liverpool right now.
