Liverpool is making a bold move this summer by trying to swoop in and steal two transfer targets from Manchester United.
Liverpool and Manchester United are set to compete for two midfielders this summer, as both teams work on rebuilding for the 2026-27 season. It looks like a busy transfer window ahead.
Liverpool have already welcomed two new players, Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet, but their coach, Andoni Iraola, says they still need more. “We’ve signed two players already, but we need more,” Iraola said in his first press conference as Liverpool’s head coach. “The club is working on it.”
Manchester United recently signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth £48 million plus £2 million in bonuses. Just hours later, news came that United are close to finalizing a deal for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for around £35 million.
United might also go for a third midfielder as they look to replace Casemiro and the injured Manuel Ugarte, who could be out for up to a year due to knee ligament damage suffered at the World Cup.
Last week, it was reported that United renewed their interest in Wolves’ Joao Gomes, whose €45 million (£38.3m) move to Atletico Madrid fell through. Brazilian outlet Globo says United have shown interest after deciding not to pursue Ederson, who didn’t pass medical tests. United have already contacted Wolves about prices and terms, but Liverpool is also said to be interested and has made inquiries.
Roma’s Manu Kone is another midfielder attracting attention. He has played very well for France at the World Cup. TEAMtalk reported earlier this month that United are interested in Kone, who wants to try the Premier League. However, Liverpool seems to be leading the chase, according to The Kopite View, who say Liverpool’s interest is more advanced.
Roma’s manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, recently hinted that the club might be willing to sell Kone this summer, mentioning financial challenges. He said, “Financial Fair Play rules vary from team to team. Roma also needs to balance its books, which have been tough in recent years. I hoped that returning to the Champions League would help, but it’s clear finances are very important. I think we’ll know more in the coming weeks.”
