Man City fans concerned after Enzo Maresca ‘didn’t use star player right’ in Arsenal loss
Manchester City fans are a bit worried about how Elliot Anderson was used in their 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield. The 23-year-old made his first official appearance for the club at the Principality Stadium after his big £115 million move from Nottingham Forest this summer.
Last season, Anderson was one of the best players in the Premier League and is an important part of the England team. But he’ll need to step up his game at the Etihad Stadium this season.
Manager Enzo Maresca started Anderson in the lineup against Arsenal, pairing him with Mateo Kovacic in the midfield. Anderson played as a No.8 but struggled because Kovacic didn’t provide much cover in their tactical setup.
After 60 minutes, Anderson was taken off for Rico Lewis after a quiet performance. He completed 81% of his passes, missed his only shot, and didn’t manage to hit any targets with his six crosses into Arsenal’s box. He also won just 33% of his duels, didn’t make a tackle, and lost the ball once.
Even though it was just a friendly game, some fans were concerned and think Anderson has a lot of room to grow before the Premier League season starts against Bournemouth next weekend.
One fan account tweeted during the match: “Anderson is being used completely wrong today. Hardly touched the ball.” A Forest supporter replied: “I hope Enzo learns quickly that Anderson shines in the center of the pitch. Nico’s movement cuts into his space, like early in today’s game and in the World Cup. He’s a fantastic player.”
Anderson’s performance also got criticism from rival fans who were quick to judge after only one game.
One social media user said: “Whoever approved the £116m deal for Elliot Anderson needs a serious talk. For that price, he should be the player teammates rely on when things get tough. He looks like an average midfielder doing average things.”
Another added: “This game showed me everything about Anderson at the top level. He does well when the game is fast and based around him, but in a structured team that needs control, he seems lost.”
Whether the issue is with Anderson or Maresca, City will need to sort it out soon.
