The verdict on Manchester City’s 115 charges case with the Premier League is finally out after months of speculation. The club has been found guilty on almost all of the charges.
Back in February 2023, the Premier League accused City of breaking financial fair play rules 115 times over nine years. More than half of those charges were about not providing up-to-date financial information.
During that time, from 2009 to 2018, City became one of Europe’s top teams, spending around €1.44 billion on new players, according to Transfermarkt. They also won the Premier League title three times—in 2012, 2014, and 2018.
Since the charges came up, City has strongly denied any wrongdoing, saying they have “irrefutable evidence” to defend themselves. The case’s hearing lasted 12 weeks, from September to December 2024, and many expected it to take months before a decision was made because of the huge amount of information.
Now, it’s been revealed that City was found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. However, no punishment has been decided yet, and City plans to appeal the verdict. Everything is still up in the air.
A City insider told The Athletic: “The Premier League process is still ongoing with many parts yet to be completed, and confidentiality must be kept. So, Manchester City’s position remains the same as in their February 2023 statement. The club has followed the process closely for eight years, expecting the Premier League to act fairly and without bias.”
Possible punishments could include fines, losing points, or—even in the worst case—being relegated from the Premier League.
