Man City to face legal action from Premier League clubs as an update is shared
Manchester City might be facing legal trouble from other Premier League clubs, who could team up for a class action following the recent verdict on 115 charges. This all started back in February 2023, and on Friday, a decision was finally announced. David Ornstein from The Athletic reported that an independent commission found City guilty on 114 out of 115 charges.
No punishments have been set yet, but everything is still on the table. City plans to appeal, but The Athletic says some Premier League clubs are already talking to top lawyers and might take legal action too. These clubs have been told they could get compensation if City is found guilty, and talks might get serious soon.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. In a previous case, Everton had to pay Burnley over £35 million after breaking the Premier League’s financial rules. Clubs missing out on Champions League spots could say they lost money because of City’s actions.
Legal steps can’t start until City’s appeal is finished, but punishments might still come before then. The charges cover nine years, from 2009/10 to 2017/18, during which City won three Premier League titles.
A City spokesperson told The Athletic the process is still ongoing and confidential, and the club stands by its statement from February 2023. They also said City has trusted the process to be fair and impartial.
City hasn’t responded to the charges on their website or social media yet. Instead, they shared a video of playmaker Rayan Cherki. When City’s new manager Maresca was appointed in July, he said he wasn’t worried about the charges. So far, Maresca has had a perfect start, winning all seven games in charge.
With the news breaking during the international break, Maresca won’t face questions at a press conference until October 9, before a big match against Liverpool. Meanwhile, he shared a curious post on Instagram showing him walking barefoot on grass, captioned: “Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn.” Many found it a bit mysterious!
