Man United planning surprise move for England star as INEOS looks to make fifth summer signing
Manchester United might be about to make one of the biggest surprise signings this summer by showing interest in one of England’s top players.
So far this summer, United have signed Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow, and Tynan Thompson. But it looks like they’re not done yet. Reports say they are fans of Djed Spence, the England and Spurs defender.
Spence was a surprise pick for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the World Cup, but he shined and helped England finish third in the tournament. His performances raised his value a lot, and Football Insider reports that United have noticed him. Michael Carrick is said to be impressed with Spence, who played well on both left and right-back during the tournament.
Other teams like Everton and Inter Milan are also interested in Spence, who Spurs value at around £40 million. He’s a former Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest player, and he even showed support for United back in 2019 with a friendly message on social media.
Spence has been told he might not be part of the new Spurs coach Roberto Di Zerbi’s plans for next season. Di Zerbi has already spent £237 million on new signings like Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke, while also signing other players for free.
It seems Spurs are okay with letting Spence leave. Inter Milan have pulled out because they think Spurs’ price is too high, though Inter are still interested in Spurs’ captain Cristian Romero, who might also move this summer.
Spurs expert Alisdair Gold thinks Spurs should keep Spence after his great World Cup, saying a £25 million price tag is “utterly ridiculous.” He points out that Spurs paid about £20 million for him, he has three years left on his contract, and just had an amazing World Cup.
Spence has also played briefly for Rennes and Genoa and has made 85 appearances for Spurs in all competitions. It looks like a very interesting transfer story is still unfolding!
