Man United transfer drama sparks after ‘stepping stone’ remark upsets new team’s fans
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek has made a permanent move to Middlesbrough this transfer window. When a “stepping stone” comment he made caused a bit of confusion, he took to X to clear things up.
Vitek’s transfer to Boro involved an undisclosed fee from Manchester United, though details about his contract length haven’t been shared yet. Middlesbrough have already signed seven players this summer as they get ready for the 2026-27 EFL Championship season.
The team started their season with a tough but exciting 1-0 win over Wrexham in the Carabao Cup last Friday. The 22-year-old goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Bristol City, where he ended up winning the Player of the Year award. He originally joined Manchester United back in 2020 from Sigma Olomouc and also won the FA Youth Cup during his time with the Red Devils.
After making his move permanent, Vitek took to social media to explain his “stepping stone” remark. In a signing video posted on Boro’s X page, he said, “New challenge for me; new stepping stone in my career; permanent move. I’m really excited. I hope everyone is as excited as me.”
Later, he added a message to fans, saying, “I wanted to clarify what I meant by ‘stepping stone’. I didn’t mean it in any negative way. This is a very important step in my career, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Vitek is clear about his goal: helping Middlesbrough reach the Premier League. Fans quickly showed their support, with messages like, “No need to apologise, big fella!” and “UTB, don’t worry. Most people knew what you meant.”
Last season, Vitek played 41 matches for Bristol City in the Championship, keeping 12 clean sheets. He also averaged 3.3 saves per game with a 71% success rate, making him one of the top goalkeepers in the league alongside Derby’s Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
Before Vitek, Boro signed six other players this summer: Jeremy Sarmiento, Myles Peart-Harris, Kyle Joseph, Will Lankshear, Sebastian Berhalter, and Max Arfsten. Lankshear made a great start by scoring in just his second game for the club against Wrexham.
Vitek is expected to make his Middlesbrough debut against Lincoln City next Saturday. The team is aiming to build on their fifth-place finish last season and their near miss in the play-off final against Hull City, with hopes of making it to the Premier League soon.
