Man United’s trip to Como might be postponed – here’s a simple look at the UEFA rules behind it
Manchester United’s trip to Como might be cancelled because of a serious weather warning.
United are set to play their third Champions League match this season in Lombardy against Cesc Fabregas’ team. But the game at the 13,600-capacity Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia could be called off due to heavy rain—64mm is expected before and during the match.
The Italian Air Force National Meteorological Service has issued an orange warning that includes dangers like lightning and thunderstorms. A video making the rounds on social media shows the stadium, where only one of the four stands has shelter.
Como is confident their pitch will hold up, and United’s coach, Michael Carrick, said the team is “used to the rain” and will “make the most of it.” Still, extreme weather might be risky for players and fans, so the match could be postponed.
UEFA’s rules say that if a game can’t start or finish as planned, the first option is to play it the next day—though this isn’t required. The home club must make sure all the necessary facilities are ready.
This could work for United, who play Bournemouth on Sunday. Como’s next game is against Sassuolo on Saturday, so they would have less time to prepare.
If the game can’t be played the next day, UEFA will pick a new date, usually at the same stadium. Any changes to venue or kick-off time need UEFA’s approval.
United are currently six games without a win and have a free midweek since they’re out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-2 to Brighton. Como, however, has a tough schedule with a game against Torino next Tuesday.
Because the postponement is due to the weather, not either team’s fault, both clubs will cover their own costs for the original and rescheduled matches.
United have stayed in Milan, about an hour from Como, because local hotels were too small or didn’t meet their standards.
This is Como’s first time in the Champions League, and they had to get UEFA’s approval to host home games at their stadium.
