Man Utd is looking into signing an Arsenal star in a surprise move this summer.
Manchester United are ready to challenge Arsenal for one of their most popular players this summer.
So far, United have signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to strengthen their midfield after Casemiro left and Manuel Ugarte got injured during the World Cup.
Improving the midfield has been Michael Carrick’s top priority ever since Casemiro decided not to renew his contract back in January. There’s been a lot of talk about signing a third midfielder, and they haven’t ruled out a big move for Aurelien Tchouameni. Tyler Adams and Alex Scott are also on their radar, though Scott might be too costly for United.
Besides the midfield, United also need to focus on their left side. Matheus Cunha had a solid first season, and Patrick Dorgu did really well when he switched to left-wing later in the campaign. Luke Shaw played in every Premier League match last season, which was the first time he’s done that. But with more games coming in the Champions League, Shaw might need to take care of himself more next season.
Recently, United have been linked with Newcastle’s full-back Lewis Hall. After Eddie Howe left Newcastle this week, United are thinking about testing Newcastle’s willingness to sell. Newcastle have already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali to Barcelona and Tottenham, while Arsenal are interested in Bruno Guimaraes.
According to The Independent, getting Hall won’t be easy, so United are also looking at Myles Lewis-Skelly. He didn’t play much for Arsenal last season but made a strong comeback near the end and even started in the Champions League final. United have liked Lewis-Skelly for a while because he can play as a left-back or in midfield.
Since Arsenal are looking to buy players like Guimaraes and Vinicius Jr. from Real Madrid, they might have to sell some players to balance their money. Selling Lewis-Skelly would be a good profit since he came through Arsenal’s academy.
In other news, United won 2-1 against Atletico Madrid on Saturday, with both goals scored by Bryan Mbeumo. Some young players got a chance to play, including Shea Lacey, who earned the penalty for Mbeumo’s equalizer, and 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who made his debut.
Carrick shared his thoughts on how the team is shaping up ahead of their first match against Hull City on August 22.
“I think as a team, we look strong, which is what matters most. Many players performed really well, especially the young ones like Jimmy [Thwaites] and JJ who got their first taste of senior football today. It’s great to give them opportunities, and, fingers crossed, no injuries,” he said.
