Man Utd fans are shocked by what one player did just before Chelsea’s first goal, as a revealing angle comes to light.
Some new clips from the referee’s camera have come out showing Chelsea’s first goal in their Premier League game against Manchester United, and it’s clear that at least two players made mistakes. Romeo Lavia stole the ball in midfield and passed it to Morgan Rogers. Rogers ran towards United’s defense from just past halfway and then cleverly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens into the net.
This was a big setback for United, who had played better in the first half but couldn’t score. Things got tougher a few minutes into the second half when Lisandro Martinez gave away a penalty and got sent off. Cole Palmer scored the penalty, making it 2-0.
Martinez had a tough game even before he was sent off. He couldn’t stop Rogers from getting the shot off. While many fans liked Martinez for speaking out against the club’s leadership after the loss to Atletico Madrid, his on-field performance hasn’t been as strong.
Martinez wasn’t the only one at fault for the first goal. Harry Maguire also didn’t close down Rogers and just watched as the Chelsea player scored. Andrey Santos tried a slide tackle on Rogers but missed by quite a distance. It’s unclear if Santos gave up halfway, but sliding left him unable to help the defense.
Fans had a good laugh at Santos’ missed tackle. One wrote, “That Santos slide tackle on the ref cam is hilarious.” Another asked, “Who was Santos even sliding at?” Others wanted to see more clips of the referee’s camera during that goal.
The rest of United’s defense didn’t escape blame either. One fan said, “The defense was basically just standing around while Rogers scored.”
Martinez got two yellow cards in just over two minutes, the second one leading to the penalty for a foul on Wesley Fofana. He left the field without any greeting from coach Michael Carrick or the staff. Palmer’s penalty made things worse at 2-0.
Whether Martinez will keep playing under Carrick is uncertain. With his contract ending this summer, it’s unclear how many more games he’ll play for United, no matter who the manager is.
