Manchester United fans might be feeling relieved after news that their attempt to sign a Premier League player was reportedly blocked.
Before the 2026/27 season starts, Michael Carrick has already brought three new players to United: midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, plus backup goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Reports say United want to add a striker to compete with Benjamin Sesko, another midfielder to handle the busy Champions League schedule, and a left-back since Luke Shaw will turn 32 next July.
Newcastle’s left-back Lewis Hall seems to be United’s top target before the September 1 transfer deadline. The young England international has impressed since joining Newcastle from Chelsea.
However, Newcastle values Hall at around £60 million and, according to journalist Keith Downie, they’ve made it clear they don’t want to sell him. They have already turned down offers from Manchester United.
Part of Newcastle’s decision comes from the fact they don’t need to sell; they made good money from selling Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon to Spurs, Arsenal, and Barcelona.
Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is said to be a backup option, but no talks have happened between clubs yet.
Many United fans have changed their minds about chasing Hall after watching his recent game in Newcastle’s pre-season friendly against Everton in Edinburgh on August 12.
On social media, fans shared their thoughts as Hall was partly to blame for Everton’s first goal. Some said things like: “Lewis Hall looks like he’s forced to play vs Everton,” and “He’s having a really bad game.” Others felt he was overrated or questioned if he’s really worth £70 million.
Newcastle starts their Premier League season at home against Liverpool on August 23.
