Manchester United fans have noticed something worrying ahead of Sunday’s big Premier League derby against Manchester City.
Man Utd won their first Champions League game on Thursday, beating Sabah, the Azeri champions. Captain Bruno Fernandes and new signing Youri Tielemans teamed up to score United’s second goal. Last season, under new manager Michael Carrick, United started strong with a 2-0 win over City in the derby, which helped spark their improved form and a third-place finish in the league. Fernandes, who had his ninth league assist that day, has been in great shape ever since. So seeing him hobble a few days before the big match is worrying for supporters.
Fernandes played the full game on Thursday, and Sabah’s manager even said he “absolutely destroyed” his team. Fernandes had a fantastic 2025-26 season, earning a second Ballon d’Or nomination. At 32, he’s still leading the new-look United midfield. After losing their first game to Hull City, they bounced back by beating Ipswich Town, with Fernandes scoring three goals and assisting another.
Michael Carrick praised him after the Ipswich win, saying, “He’s got a lot of experience to share and leads by example. Sometimes we look to players like him to give us that extra push, and he did that today. He offers a lot to the team, and there’s plenty more to come.”
