Manchester United is working hard to build a team that can compete in both the Premier League and the Champions League. Now, they’re reportedly interested in a World Cup star.

New permanent head coach Michael Carrick did a great job last season, finishing third in the league as an interim coach, and he’ll want to keep improving this year. One area they need to improve is midfield because one of Carrick’s key players, Casemiro, left the club this summer on a free transfer.

Manuel Ugarte, who could have helped, sadly got a knee injury during Uruguay’s World Cup game against Spain and will be out for a while as he recovers. It looked like United were close to signing his replacement, Ederson from Atalanta, but journalist Gianluca Di Marzio says the 27-year-old passed his medical, and then the club decided not to go ahead with the deal.

Now, reports from Gazzetta dello Sport say that Manchester United is interested in Roma’s Manu Kone, who’s been impressive for France at the World Cup. The 25-year-old midfielder has played four games so far and might play in the semi-final against Spain as France chases their third World Cup title.

United aren’t the only ones watching Kone—Arsenal and Newcastle are also keeping an eye on him, and Roma reportedly won’t accept any offers lower than €50 million (£42 million). According to Sport Mediaset, though, the Red Devils have made contact with Kone’s agency, Excellence Sport Nation, which also represents Bryan Mbeumo, a current player at United.

Earlier this week, it was said that United was interested in Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who is also at the World Cup with France. But now, it looks like he’ll stay at Real after signing a new long-term deal with the club until 2031, especially after positive talks with new manager Jose Mourinho. So, a move to the Premier League for Tchouameni seems unlikely for now.
