A popular Manchester United player seems to be in a bit of uncertainty at Old Trafford as the summer transfer window approaches.

United have already secured their spot in next season’s Champions League with Michael Carrick stepping in as interim manager, and they’ve started planning for the future. They’re putting together a list of players they want to sign, and according to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Elche’s centre-back David Affengruber is on their radar.

The 25-year-old Austrian has been a target before, especially under Ruben Amorim, who saw him as a long-term partner for Leny Yoro. But Amorim was sacked in January before the deal could happen. Right now, Yoro shares playing time with Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven on the left side of central defence, while Harry Maguire usually starts on the right.

According to experienced journalist Andy Mitten, who has covered United for over 35 years and runs the popular fanzine The United Stand, Martinez’s future at the club is uncertain and he might leave this summer. The Argentine is under contract until 2027 but has had several injuries recently, including a serious ACL injury.

The Manchester Evening News says Carrick and the coaching team value Martinez’s personality and leadership, but it’s still unclear if Carrick will be managing by summer.

Mitten shared on the Talk Of The Devils podcast, “I think Martinez needs to be playing all the time. There are opinions about him similar to what happened with Maguire last December. It’s like, ‘You want a new contract? Then you need to play regularly and perform well.’

“Martinez’s position at Manchester United feels a little uncertain right now. On his good days, he’s absolutely brilliant—no one plays out from the back better than him. He’s a big presence in the dressing room, and at times under Carrick, he even captained the team. But he really needs consistent game time.

“If he’s worrying about his future or a new contract, the club likely won’t offer one unless he proves himself on the pitch.”
