Man Utd don’t want to repeat the Mohamed Salah mistake as big news about Bruno Fernandes’ contract comes out

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is in the final year of his contract, and the club wants to make sure they get the negotiations right.

There were rumors that Fernandes might leave this summer, with Turkish club Galatasaray among those interested in signing the 32-year-old. But the influential Portuguese player made it clear he wants to stay at Old Trafford, where he’s been since joining from Sporting Lisbon over six years ago. Now, Manchester United are working hard to secure his future long-term.

The club has been talking with Fernandes for a while, even before he set the Premier League record for most assists (21) in a season. The tricky part is figuring out the best contract terms. Fernandes will turn 33 next September, and it’s natural that his performance might slow down a bit over time.

His current deal runs until June 2027, with a one-year option that could extend it to 2028. According to TEAMtalk, United are ready to offer an even longer deal—possibly up to 2029—giving Fernandes more security.

Right now, he is the second highest-paid player at Old Trafford, after Marcus Rashford. The new contract might include a clause where the length depends on how many games he plays.

Age is a big factor too. If Fernandes signs through 2029, he’ll be almost 35, and the club is cautious about how much longer he can stay at his best. They don’t want to make a long-term commitment like Liverpool did with Mohamed Salah. Salah helped them win the Premier League, then signed a two-year contract, but his performance dropped quickly, and he left on a free transfer to a Turkish club.

After winning both the Football Writers’ and PFA Player of the Year awards last season, Fernandes joined a list of United legends like Wayne Rooney, George Best, and Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s said he wants to stay with the club and win more trophies, like the League Cup and FA Cup, that he’s already lifted at Old Trafford.

“I want to achieve everything those players achieved by winning with the club,” Fernandes said in May. “Being in their company with this award is really important to me. That will always be a prize. I’ve never hidden from my goals—I want to win the league and Champions League.”

Unfortunately, United’s chances of winning a trophy this season got off to a rocky start after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton and winning only one of their first five Premier League games.
