Man Utd is interested in a £75m transfer target, but it will need a big bid on deadline day to get it done.
Reports say that Manchester United would need to offer more than £75 million for Newcastle United to even think about selling Lewis Hall on transfer deadline day. If United do make a move late in the summer window, they’re likely looking for a left-back to challenge Luke Shaw, who’s in the last year of his contract at Old Trafford.
Last month, United spoke to Alejandro Balde’s team to see if a deal could happen, but Balde wants to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. Other names linked with United recently include Jorge Salinas from Racing Santander, Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen, and Brighton’s Ferdi Kadioglu.
However, Lewis Hall seems to be their main target. According to the Daily Mail, United are interested and open to signing a left-back if the right chance comes up. But after already spending about £150 million on midfielders Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba, signing Hall won’t be easy.
Newcastle are determined to keep Hall, who has been impressive in the early games this season. The report says it would take over £75 million to even make them think about selling him.
Near the end of last month, Peter Schmeichel told Newcastle’s coach Matthias Jaissle on live TV that Manchester United are “looking at signing your left-back.” Jaissle is keen to work with Hall going forward. After Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool, Jaissle was asked about transfer plans.
He said, “I think it will be a stressful time for our sporting director [Ross Wilson]. We definitely have some needs.” When asked if they plan to strengthen a certain position, Jaissle paused, and Schmeichel encouraged him to share more. Jaissle teased, “I was about to tell you, but I’ll keep it a secret. If players come in, some might go out too.”
Then Schmeichel said, “We’re [Manchester United] looking at your left-back.” Jaissle smiled and replied, “No chance. No chance.”
